The English Major

The Bachelor of Arts in English requires students to complete at least 30 hours of English courses. In addition to the core English curriculum of 12 semester hours (which includes a capstone), students choose courses in Strategic, Creative, and Critical Communication, and in Critical Reading and Research. Students seeking certification as a secondary school teacher follow a similar track, and also must complete a Professional Education sequence.

For students interested in pre-professional degrees, English majors also have access to the Accelerated B.A. to M.A. in English and the Fifth-Year M.A.T. (Master of Arts in Teaching) program. The department also offers a traditional Master of Arts in English.

English department faculty members combine a high level of knowledge of their specialty areas with a commitment to excellent teaching. Among the awards won by faculty in the Department of English are Winthrop's Kinard Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Phi Kappa Phi Excellence in Teaching Award; additionally, several members of the Department hold the title of Distinguished Professor.

Students may find it helpful to review the English Majors' Map (PDF - 52 KB) when planning out their time at Winthrop.
