Naturally, amazing learning experiences occur in our classrooms every day, but here at Winthrop, we believe that equally amazing ones can take place in other parts of the world as well!
We currently offer English classes such as Paris in the Jazz Age, Greek Mythology, Scott and Zelda, and Holocaust Literature. These classes include travel to European cities such as Paris, Rome, Venice, Athens, Delphi, Munich, Nuremberg, and Amsterdam. In addition to earning 3.0 credit hours, student travelers earn a number of global cultural events credits as well.
We live in a global society, and travel abroad expands horizons, broadens minds, and enhances cultural understanding, all of which help prepare students for their future roles in today's world.

Each year, we take a group of English majors to the American Shakespeare Center in Virginia for a weekend of plays and educational workshops at the award-winning Blackfriars Playhouse, the world's only recreation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre.
Students see four Renaissance and Restoration plays performed in historically-accurate theatre conditions, attend a lecture with the founder of the ASC, and participate in educational workshops and tours, all in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley!
Our Shakespeare Spring Break trip has become a beloved and integral part of our students' learning experience at Winthrop!
Each year, Winthrop University's student affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (WU NCTE) travels to the national NCTE convention, held in locations such as Orlando, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis, and Houston. The trip, always held in mid-November, is led by English Education program directors and offers students an exciting opportunity to network in the field!
Our pre-service English teachers attend workshops, watch films, talk with young adult authors (Jason Reynolds, Sharon Draper, David Levithan, Neal Shusterman, to name a few), gather teaching ideas and supplies, and explore new cities.
