Monica King is an instructor in the Human Development and Family Studies program. After growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina, she attended Western Carolina University for a B.S. in Child and Family Studies with a minor in English. Monica began her career as a case manager at the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services, where she evaluated eligibility and performed case management for individuals and families receiving assistance from economic support programs such as food stamps and Medicaid. She moved into a higher level case management position in the NC Adoption Assistance program, guiding families through the process of adopting children who were in foster care and educating and supporting families in multiple ways throughout their children's journeys toward adulthood. While continuing in this role for the next several years, Monica earned an M.A. in Human Services from Bellevue University. As she became increasingly interested in training and teaching, she sought opportunities to expand her knowledge in the areas of teaching and learning. To reach this goal, she pursued an M.Ed. in Learning and Technology from Western Governors University and a Post-Master's Graduate Certificate in University and College Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. After nearly two decades working for Mecklenburg County, Monica moved into the role of Family Partner Coordinator with a Medicaid-managed care organization, where she integrated her education, training, and professional experience with her personal experience to support, educate, and advocate for families raising children with complex needs such as intellectual/developmental disabilities, mental health conditions, substance use disorder, or traumatic brain injury. Monica has earned the credentials of Human Services-Board Certified Practitioner from the Center for Credentialing and Education and the National Organization for Human Services, Certified Family Life Educator from the National Council on Family Relations, and Certified Family Peer Specialist from the National Federation of Families. She is passionate about the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equity and advocates for the LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent communities. Monica is a volunteer with PFLAG Charlotte and serves on the board of directors of Union County Pride. She resides in Indian Trial, North Carolina with her spouse, their two children, their dog, and four cats.
