Department of World Languages and Cultures Programs

    The requirement for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Modern Languages with a Concentration in Spanish is 36 semester hours above the elementary level. Required courses include classes in composition and conversation, one literature class, and one culture/civilization class. In addition, two courses in another language are required. 

    Proficiency in language skills must be demonstrated before graduation by completing successfully the ACTFL oral proficiency interview. For details of this requirement, see the statement in the current catalog.

    The department encourages majors and minors to include a study abroad experience in their course of studies.  Read about the Global Learning Initiative for sample four-year plans and more information.

    Teacher certification programs are available in French and Spanish. A minor in French, German, or Spanish requires 18 semester hours above the elementary level, six of which must be above the 299-level.

    The department sponsors study abroad programs on a rotating basis in countries such as Costa Rica, France, Germany, and Spain. Read more information about department-specific study abroad opportunities.
