Practicum and Internship

Program Description

Counseling Services offers a training program for doctoral or master's level graduate students enrolled in counseling or clinical psychology.  Counselors in Training have the opportunity to provide mental health counseling for individuals, couples, or groups.  They will be engaged in outreach and consultation with the campus community.  Counselors in training can expect to enhance the development of their clinical skills through direct service and intensive individual and group supervision.  They are expected to participate in case conferences and training seminars as they arise throughout the year.

Program Options

Two Semester Internship (Preferred):

The two-semester internship position requires 20-22 hours per week of training experience for a minimum of 600 clock-hours over two (2) semesters.  Interested trainees must commit one academic year to the training program and be available to engage in a 3-day Intern Orientation and preliminary training prior to the first day of classes. This orientation takes place from Wednesday through Friday prior to the first day of classes for the fall semester.  Eligible applicants should at least be in their second year of training and have completed at least one practicum.  Applicants must have completed at least 100 hours of on-site work, with 40 hours of direct contact with clients (face to face work with clients).

One Semester Internship:

The single semester internship position requires 20-22 hours per week of training experience for a minimum of 300 clock-hours and 120 direct clinical hours over one (1) semester.  Interested trainees must commit the full spring 2021 semester to the training program and be available to engage in a 3-day Intern Orientation and preliminary training prior to the first day of classes. This orientation takes place from Wednesday through Friday prior to the first day of classes for the ensuing semester (Fall or Spring).  Eligible applicants should at least be in their second year of training and have completed at least one practicum.  Applicants must have completed at least 100 hours of on-site work, with 40 hours of direct contact with clients (face to face work with clients).

Practicum Training (One Semester):

The one semester practicum training position requires a maximum of 100 - 120 total hours of training experience including 40 – 60 hours of direct client interaction for the semester.  Sufficient clock hours (minimum 100) which include direct clinical hours (40 - 60) are available to trainees over a regular 15-week semester. Interested applicants must commit to one full semester consisting of at least 15 weeks and be available to engage in a 3-day orientation and preliminary training prior to the first day of classes. This orientation takes place from Wednesday through Friday prior to the first day of classes for the ensuing semester (Fall or Spring). 

 

Training positions are unpaid.
